Car Wars monthly get together in NE Ohio
So I have been talking to the owner at my FLGS that I run a couple of different games at and was wondering if there would be any interest in maybe a monthly meet up to play some Car Wars. I am located in North East Ohio and the store is in North Olmsted.
I would like to start out probably small and light and just do some Car Wars classic games and then expand out from there if there is enough interest. I have not run a Car Wars "league" before so if anyone has any suggestions on getting one possibly started, any help would be greatly appreciated. If you are interested, just send me a PM here on the forums and I can direct you to where we are discussing things. Thanks!!

Take a look at the Corporate Car Wars system in L'Outrance and ADQ 4/4. It provides a pretty good system for running a league of sorts.
The other option is to just make the games one-off battles, setting the next game up at the beginning or end of the current game. This might be a better system initially until you've got a feel for the players and their interests.

Re: Car Wars monthly get together in NE Ohio
One problem to watch out for when running a league: What happens when one player proves so superior to all others, he drives off the competition? No one shows up up to place "first loser"; and having a points system where the winner is locked in after the third event is going to be a major disappointment for everyone who isn't him.
(Do not ask me how I know this. :P )

When I was playing Dice Masters (have a bunch I'd be willing to trade, wink wink) their first OP was done that way... You got points for 1st, 2nd, 3rd each week as well as prizes. At the end the overall 1st & 2nd got something big. The points increased every couple of weeks so people that came into the league late still had a chance and the ones that were there the first few weeks would easily beat the winners of the first few weeks if the 'winners' started dropping out. Made it MUCH more exciting! |

Re: Car Wars monthly get together in NE Ohio
That's nice; but any points-based system will have the problem where someone can run off a bunch of early victories, then "coast home" in the knowledge that his point total cannot be exceeded in the events available. And it's always easier for the guy who's in the lead early to "coast" if all events score the same; the first event of a 30-event season is "1 of 1", while the last is "1 of 30"....

Re: Car Wars monthly get together in NE Ohio
Or do it as a ladder where the points the winner gains are determined based on the points your opponent has. Thus if you beat the current leader you get more points than if you beat someone further down the food chain.
If the looser also looses points (with points inversely proportional to the level of the opponent) then the outright leader will have to keep winning to stay ahead and a loss against a low ranking opponent could cripple them. For this to work you must also say refusing a challenge is consider a loss (or the leader will just refuse to risk his lead by fighting anyone). |

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. I will definitely keep all this in mind and run it by everyone who joins to see how we should handle things and what is most fair.
