Melee Rulebook Combat Example - Flavius dudded?
In the Melee Rulebook, in the Combat Example (on the last page):
On turn 6, Wulf attacks (and hits) but Flavius does not attack. Why not? |

Good catch! It's an ancient mistake present in the original printing of the example too. Either Flavius' player forgot to attack, or he thought the -2 penalty next turn/action meant he also couldn't attack until next turn, or he did attack and missed and the author didn't write it down.

Correct; that looks like a mistake inherited from the original. Funny to think how many hundreds of times its been read without my ever having noticed or heard about it!

I seem to recall being bugged by that omission when I was a kid, pouring over the rules. Now would be perhaps the time to "fix" it, though I'm sure there are countless more important tasks to perform.

Sorry, I just had a brainfart. Wulf was a big scary barbarian and he rolled double damage on me with a two handed sword! I thought I was a goner. Lucky I didn't soil my armor...

You know what? I actually find this explanation utterly satisfying. No more is required. My childhood question is answered, and I am content. Thanks for clearing that up, Flavius! :)

I've seen it happen in real life, and depending on the skill level of the player I may or may not say something. Explanations vary from "I didn't want to do anything" to "I'm afraid of rolling a 17 or 18 and my chances to hit are so low this turn I don't want to risk it" and everything in between.
And thanks, Flavius, for your official answer. Last edited by pyratejohn; 09-21-2018 at 04:23 AM. |
