Hiking and movement per day seems wrong.
In the GURPS 4th ed Campaigns book (3rd printing) pg351 reads:
"The distance in miles you can march in one day, under ideal conditions, equals 10 x move." This means if I am unencumbered and on AVERAGE (NO modifier) terrain and my MOVE is 5 (DEX 10) I can march 50 miles per day! I researched this and just about everywhere I look the best of us in ideal conditions (NORMAL fit folks NOT hyper-trained special forces etc. that have nearly no limit!) the max distance in miles per day traveled in general is 20 to maybe 30 miles per day. The multiplier here should be 4 NOT 10. Any comments? Am I doing this wrong? Help. BTW after 2 decades of playing GURPS it still is my go to system for detailed, open system play. GURPS is the dice! |

My research, I should have stated, was not GURPS related, but REAL world. Maybe I should have been clear about that. Sorry. I am interested in friendly comments regarding my observation. Any thoughts? Thanks. Last edited by GMB; 03-03-2017 at 05:48 PM. |

I don't think he meant that he researched everywhere, just that everywhere he researched gave much lower numbers.
Though I can't imagine how someone that joined in 2005 failed to see those emotionally intense threads. Edit: ninja-ed by the OP.

I don't post very often on forums because of this kind of response. How about some help and not comments about me. What are you all doing in your games? Be nice. BTW Thanks Anaraxes for your help. That was useful. Last edited by GMB; 03-03-2017 at 05:57 PM. |

Okay, the basic comment is "many people have noticed this, pretty much since 4th edition was published, and there have been massive threads on the topic which no-one really wants to rehash. There are some alternative rules in High Tech which may seem more realistic".

Re: Hiking and movement per day seems wrong.
The Hiking rules seem to be based on an optimal situation that rarely occurs in reality. Pretty much every scenario and modifier will reduce the base time.
The threads supplied by Anaraxes cover the subject pretty well. High-Tech is definitely worth a look.

Re: Hiking and movement per day seems wrong.
I think the system in DF 16 will give you close to the system you want. An average man in "normal" conditions (light forest/slightly hilly plains) will walk about 20 to 30 miles in a day, depending on whether someone has Survival skill.
I actually think the book is doing a disservice being in the DF series because a lot of people will ignore it because they don't do DF.
