Of course, when a Seraph says something is unflattering, they mean it as a mark of approval.

Angels of Litheroy see cosmetic surgery and make up as a type of secret the person is trying to keep. Afterall, it alters how a person looks.

How they deal with that can be interesting.

I can't see them making a big stink about make up, but cosmetic surgery? hm...

If anything I would see it as the other way around: surgery changes the underlying reality with it while makeup generates a distance between it and the appearance.

You think so?

Surgery superficially changes what a person presents to the world. It affects how they are perceived, but it's not what God intended for them originally. They are pretty much taking their own Creation in their hands.

There are some pretty weighty metaphysical implications to this. Not that that's a bad thing - I'm still working through the implications of a metaphysics in which Seraphim make sense - but it is something to be aware of and that requires reëvaluating much of the rest of the setting.

Why should that be limited to *cosmetic* surgery? If God intended for you to be born with a cleft palate or a heart murmur, then who are you, puny mortal, to interfere with the Divine Plan?

The intentions of the Divine are not easily ascertained.

I am not counting surgery to save someone's life, or help someone gain their health because it's Medicine. Isn't what part of Heaven's portfolio?

But cosmetic surgery is not necessary and most people undergo the procedure out of vanity, more so than anything else.

Even there, though, there's gray areas -- a hare-lip, for instance, may not be a full cleft pallet, and may not much-hinder the ability of someone to eat. I don't think most humans would complain if a hair-lip got repaired, or call it "vanity."

Would a Seraph? O;>
