If it's any help, this individual did not achieve his maximum military rank until fairly late (the last third) of the war—and he resigned it (due to aforementioned health problems) just a year or two before the war's end.

Edit: Since I'm about to start traveling for the holidays in a few hours and don't want this to drag on too much due to a poor subject selection on my part, this hint should get people the rest of the way: The character began his career under Gustavus Adolphus.

Indeed it is!

I had no idea that he would be half as difficult to track down as he was. Something I'll have to keep in mind next time.

Yesterday I even looked up the wiki category "Swedish military engineers," but somehow I missed him. Interesting guy.

I'll put one up in a couple of hours, or anyone else feel free if they have one now.

Could it be Louis Antoine de Bougainville?

Good guess, but this guy wrote some of the same kinds of stuff, but he never gained any Military or other Rank to speak of.

Edit: could add Reputation: "Visited Exotic and Potentially Dangerous Places."

Edit2: Bougainville and this person apparently visited some of the same places.

I know exactly one TL 5 American author with poor financial wherewithal, and that's Mark Twain / Samuel Clemens. (Edit: Which also dovetails with the whole boating thing...)

So I guess that's my guess!

Nope, we're looking at the high seas, and it's not Richard Henry Dana, Jr.
