Default Using annihilation to avoid bad stuff

In our last game we got to discuss whether it was possible to use the Annihilation card after you fail a runaway and was hit by bad stuff "You are dead!".

Annihilation removes a card all together and all its effects, but since the fight is over - you lost - and you fail to run away - you are dead - is it then possible to cast the annihilation card and get away in that way?

Some dice cards can do this, but just like curses you are hit instantly. Can annihilation be used here?

You would have to play Annihilation before rolling to Run Away. Once you roll, you suffer the effects immediately, unless you have a card that specifically changes the die roll or says you may use it even after failing a Run Away roll. Annihilation doesn't say either one.

Ups, forgot everything about this thread. Thanks for the answer.

Seems we've played it very wrong then. So this also means you can't protect yourself against a curse from kicking in the door or being the victim of a curse from another player by using Annihilation?

Half right. As written, Annihilation WILL protect you from a Curse played by another player, as long as you play Annihilation immediately, but will not protect you from a Curse found by kicking down the door.

Just got to thinking about what you said long ago, Andrew.

What is the logic of being unable to eliminate a curse and kicking open the door? Does the card indicate that can't be eliminated by Annihilation or is that a fan discussion which ended up with that result?

Annihilation says it cancels cards played by opponents. The game isn't your opponent. That's really all there is to it. This is an OLD card, written by Steve, and I'm not going to second-guess his wording.

Getting back to the original question in this thread, since “Annihilation says it cancels cards played by opponents”, then the only monster you could play it on (and escape the Bad Stuff) is a Wandering Monster, correct? Any other monster would be played by the game or yourself.

You can REMOVE any card in play. You can only CANCEL cards played by opponents, and only as those cards are being played. It’s a somewhat meaningless distinction in a lot of cases, but not all of them.
