Crowd funded magic?
What with various crowd funded site there are I was wondering if anyone would incorporate it in to their games.
Making a magic item or something, crowd fund it? |

Re: Crowd funded magic?
What's the difference between that and ritual casting?

Re: Crowd funded magic?
"We plan to ressurrect the heroes of old to get rid of the monster terrorizing the country.
Everyone is invited to come and pray at the altar of Kurios Salvus. If at least 100 people pray between now and the new moon, they will feel weak until midnight on that day and our champion will be reborn. If more come and pray, we may get his horse and perhaps even his faithful sidekick ?" It could be an interesting take on ceremonial magic... Reduce the fp total of the participant between the time they commit to the KS healing, and the time of the healing. (ie they will have -1 max fp until then). If they pray before the full moon, they will gain blessed for a day after the casting. Likewise if they pay 2 fp. (only 1 will go toward the ceremonial casting). Something like that ? Re: Crowd funded magic?
In a modern game that allows spells to be cast over physical wires, I could see this as being viable. Just use Ceremonial Casting rules, and then some Distance modifiers to represent the milliseconds of delay in receiving the magic, but ONLY if your setting is one that has internet wires capable of transmitting Mana

It allows you to get the money to rent an arena in the first place.

GURPS Thaumatology: Urban Magics has rules for Mass Magic that could probably be adapted.

Re: Crowd funded magic?
It was just an idea I wanted to share and to see how it evolved.
Sounds pretty good though. I do like the bit where you can help and get a blessing or something in return. |

Re: Crowd funded magic?
On a critical success, we'll throw in a second hero, free! Now how much would you pray?
Supplies are limited; cast now. Familiar spirits are standing by for your call. |

Re: Crowd funded magic?
Taking a look at the Mass Magic rules in Urban Magic, plus Magic Items 3 having a modem plus landlines capable of transmitting Mana (which can transmit 2 FP of spells over the connection), combined with streaming the ritual casting over the internet, you could conceivably have literally THOUSANDS of people observing the ritual. Main problem: Trolls. Unless you make the observation of the ritual a private invitation, Trolls observing the ritual would negate any advantage there would be to having the 100 max observers per conductor with 1 energy each feeding into the spell. You could also hire your Conductors over this... It'd be fun to run, but would likely be chaotic each time you attempt simply because of people purposefully disturbing the ritual simply by watching and being against the ritual.
