Unfortunately, we suffer from a 2D bias, but that is not uncommon in gaming (though it is not that hard to find distance). The problem is that you can fit a lot of combatants even within close range, especially if they have modest delta-vs, and any space conflict could have a lot of combatants. For example, a setting that uses inertialess STL engines could have SM+10 AKV carriers that could easily transport two hundred SM+4 AKVs each, meaning that two forces, each with ten AKV carriers and ten destroyers, could have over four thousand combatants. When you are talking about the fleets of interstellar civilizations though, the number of combatants could easily reach millions.
