Here's the thing. You can't. The books are designed to be plugged into what your space setting is, with modest modification. Various things in the books hint at historical events, specifically:

1. There were previous eras of nonhuman interstellar civilization before this one and the Engai and the Aurora date back to them.
2. There was a Long Night that followed the first era of human interstellar expansion.
3. The generation ships of the Great Spiral were fleeing some massive threat.
4. Colonies at the far side of the Orion arm have had time to reach their carrying capacity.
5. The Phoenix Domain were founded by the losing side of a civil war.

The rest has to be filled in.

Events and themes such as 'The Long Night' & precursor civilizations are so prevalent in a lot of SF that it tends to blend together.
