(...continued)

Throughout Henrietta’s recitation, the rest of the group listened carefully and Aurelia furiously scribbled notes in her personal journals. In the end, though, they decided that an attempt to breach the portal above Manhattan offered the best opportunity to move the airship to the 1711 world.

A.J. and Steven thought that, with some careful piloting, favorable winds, and support from technology spells, the dirigible could probably cover the 2,200 miles or so to the East Coast in a week or so.

(While 45 mph times 24 hours equaled 1,080 miles a day, they lacked the fuel capacity to run the engines at cruising speed the entire distance. However, given that prevailing winds in North America usually blow from west to east, they had a good chance to find an air-mass at some altitude moving favorably at 20-30 mph, or so. If they gave the engines just enough power to keep navigational control, as needed, they could make the whole trip in less than a week on the fuel they could carry, and still have enough left over for night-time maneuvers above Manhattan. That also meant they could keep Claudia’s techno-magic spells as an emergency backup.)

That said, it meant for a long, cramped, uncomfortable trip for everybody, the success of which depended on what they found in this world’s New York City, about which they basically knew nothing.

Aurelia, Henrietta and A.J. recalled that the portal on their world had been under the control of a group called the Esagila Guardians. The magical lodge apparently secretly controlled the Empire State Building through many cut-outs, shell-companies and institutional investment funds.

The Esagila Guardians may also have funded the Erie Canal project in the early 19th Century that made New York City the foremost port in North America and a center of Western Civilization, Henrietta recalled from her earlier perusals. While she hadn’t thought to check into whether or not the 1919 version of New York enjoyed the same infrastructure advantages, the group thought it seemed prudent to assume that a similarly powerful secret group controlled the portal to the Realm of Jupiter on this world.

The group kicked around the idea of sending Henrietta, Aurelia, Beatrice and Jimmy to New York by train, ahead of time, but reluctantly nixed the notion as they really had no good way to get the scouts through a war-zone alerted to look for small groups of travelers.

After all, they knew the local version of U.S. intelligence forces had a couple of months to piece together how they’d pulled off the dirigible caper. While the counter-intelligence guys probably assumed the airship had crashed, somewhere (the mostly likely outcome), they were undoubtedly on the lookout for unknown persons who might match descriptions of known associates of certain individuals suspected of spying for somebody.

That meant they had to use the airship, and A.J. had plotted out a course. He said they should travel north to the mountains east of where Promontory, Utah, would be in their world. The ground rose there, east of the Great Salt Lake, but the mountains had a low area, as well, which was why the tracks of the Intercontinental Railroad from the east and west met there, in their world.

As such, A.J. knew they could find their way across the mountains more easily than they could by flying straight east, back through the Colorado Rockies. As a bonus, they’d pass well north of Denver.

The group packed up the new gondolas with everything they’d need, and in the wee hours of the morning in early September (to take advantage of the calm conditions and avoid prying eyes), they lifted off. The took the trip slowly, so as to conserve fuel, and by the time they reached the vicinity of what would be Rock Springs, Wyoming, the day was drawing to a close.

At that point, Steven turned the dirigible east and generally followed the route of what would be Interstate-80, in their world. He also found a following wind, and it took them over the mountains, most of which rose to no more than 8,000 feet along their route (but as high as 12,000 feet around them).

By dawn, A.J. had taken the helm of the Paradise but, unlike fixed-wing aircraft, he didn’t have to keep his hands on the controls, constantly. As such, he could move around the gondola and, at one point shortly after sunrise, looked down and thought he saw movement in the trees of the foothills of the Wyoming Rockies.

He had the group pull out binoculars and take a look. Below them lay a force of several hundred of what appeared to be Cossack cavalry, moving eastward out of the mountains.

Apparently, they weren’t the only ones who knew about the easier path through the Rockies. Fortunately, the Russian force didn’t seem to be aware of their presence, and the Paradise left them behind, soon enough.

However, within a couple of hours, the group looked down and saw the shining band of the railroad line they’d learned that ran from the copper mines at Butte, Montana, down to the foundries in Denver and Pueblo. Clearly, the Cossacks planned to support the Spanish effort with a raid in force designed to disrupt the railway and wreak havoc amongst the civilian farms and towns.

This set off a brief debate. A.J. said it might be possible to drop in altitude enough to scatter leaflets on the rail line and warn of the raid. However, he noted that had a fair chance of getting them spotted by someone, and Denver wasn’t really that far away.

In the end, the group decided they’d interfered enough with this world’s history and noted that, while those in the path of several hundred Cossacks would face some serious risk to life and limb, it would take far more than that to seriously threaten the U.S. war effort.

So, the group maintained their altitude, with its favorable winds, and continued their journey, which went well enough for the next couple of days.

A.J. had plotted a route that (very) roughly paralleled where I-80 would be in their world, but shifted about a hundred miles south of it by the time they reached the border of Wyoming and Nebraska. While the farm country wouldn’t be as empty in this world as it was in 2015 America, people would still be few and fair between in the prairie below

Moreover, the altitude of the land slowly dropped as they moved away from the mountains, which meant the Paradise got harder and harder to spot. Additionally, the route across the prairie allowed them to steer well south of the random and unpredictable weather of the Great Lakes.

By the time they crossed the Missouri River between Omaha and Kansas City, they needed binoculars to see the tiny dots of river barges, far below, and the late summer relative humidity had increased enough to make the air increasingly hazy.

Soon thereafter, late in the day, they crossed into Iowa. Steven, who had the helm at the time, looked ahead and saw flickering death as the sun began to set behind them.

A line of huge cumulonimbus clouds, towering at least 20,000 feet above them and flickering with lighting, stretched in a vast arc from their northeast down around to their southwest. Apparently, they’d caught up with a cold front squall that had popped a wall of thunderstorms across the hot and humid late summer plains.

Steven noted that the winds toward the clouds had picked up, and he fired up the engines. If the Paradise got pulled into the storm-clouds, the violent drafts would tear the airship apart.

He, A.J. and Henrietta conferred for awhile, and decided they should point the nose of the airship northeast and run the engines enough to give them helm control. That would allow them to take advantage of the winds following the storm front, but keep them well away from it.

Steven, as the better pilot, decided to keep the helm through the night. He popped some caffeine pills and used the lightning flashes and the light of the nearly full moon to track the storm’s progress. Good piloting kept him well windward of the storm as the dirigible moved across Iowa. By morning they’d reached the border with Illinois.

At that point, A.J. took the helm andSteven crawled through the access tunnel to the rear gondola, where he collapsed into a deep sleep.

Below, A.J. saw devastation in the wake of the storm. Despite the altitude, he could see clear signs of localized flooding and what appeared to be tornado tracks.

A.J. kept he helm for the rest of the day, and by late afternoon, the [i]Paradise[/] neared the border with Indiana. A.J. had kept an eye on the storm front throughout the day and noted that it had continued to bear southeast. However, he saw clouds looping around his flight path, and realized the end of the low pressure trough had to lie almost directly ahead.

The former NASA engineer knew he had to bear northeast, anyway, and he thought that if he made for the shores of Lake Erie, he might skirt around the northern edge of the occlusion. That would require that he buck some winds on the way through, but if he managed it, Steven could have smooth flying through northwest Indiana by the time he took over again.

That would give them a straight shot northwest across Ohio to eastern Pennsylvania and get them ahead of the northern edge of the storm-front before they reached the Appalachians.

So, A.J. decided to go for it, and within an hour the ride started to get wobbly. The swaying gondolas made some the group feel queasy and regret that they’d forgotten to bring Dramamine. The trip got rougher, and A.J. started to think he’d perhaps made a mistake.

At about that time, Steven woke from his dead sleep and heard water pattering down on the roof the gondola. Rain was streaming down the sides of the dirigible’s envelope.

(...continued)

The former Marine pilot crawled back through the keel access to find out what was going on and found A.J. fiercely concentrating as the Paradise flew through the gathering twilight. A quick look around revealed that, while some gusty winds had caused the dirigible to sway around, lightning flickers remained few and far to the south.

Steven stood ready to assist, but after another hour, or so, he realized that A.J. had managed to pull it off.

(Basically, I put a penalty of -3 to A.J.’s Piloting skill to pull off this stunt, and Anten made the roll, exactly.)

The flight through the rougher air had caused the keel to start to emit a rather alarming creak, so once the air had started to calm, A.J. passed the helm to Steven and took a flashlight up into the envelope to check. There, he discovered the braces they’d added to reinforce the section of the keel they’d warped during the landing in Dark Canyon had flexed rather more than he liked.

A.J. tightened the bolts down as much as he could with just the tools at his disposal, reported the situation, and then crawled back to the rear gondola to get something to eat, and to rest and sleep.

By morning, the Paradise had crossed Ohio and the forests of northwest Pennsylvania lay below. Ahead they saw the ripples of the green-clad Appalachians.

They knew the land between Pittsburg and Cleveland was a heavily-populated part of their world’s Rust Belt. A.J. said they probably needed to cross Pennsylvania south of Steeltown and then bend back north, again, to avoid that airspace. The population grew sparse along the southern border of Pennsylvania and, while he didn’t want to go that far, A.J. figured the settlement patterns were probably similar on this world.

Additionally, he figured the prevailing winds meant they could go in that direction without using the engines, at all, and that mattered a lot, at this point. His assessment proved correct, and by early afternoon, they saw the smoggy haze of Pittsburg, north of them, sliding to the rear.

At that point, A.J. turned the nose of the [i]Paradise almost exactly northwest, and Steven relieved him at the helm. Steven used the engines and the helium pump to change altitude in search of a good wind, and as the sun set in the west he found a stream that moved almost straight east at 30 mph.

He put the engines at one-quarter power and moved northeast through the easterly wind, and in the pre-dawn gloom he saw the Susquehanna River below him. To the north, the southern edge of the Blue Mountain Ridge blocked his view of the confluence of the Juniata River, he realized the Paradise was flying north of the small capitol city of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Looking south, Steven could see the lights of Harrisburg, so he turned the Paradise north to parallel the Susquehanna River.

At that point, the group put their heads together to decide what to do, next. New York City didn’t lie that far away, and they knew Harrisburg almost certainly had passenger trains that went there. Moreover, while low, the Blue Mountain Ridge would shield them if they dropped low enough to allow some of them to rappel down.

They decided that was their best shot, especially since they’d arrived in the area more or less by luck and finding a better place would likely cost them fuel they couldn’t spare. They were down to about an eighth of their capacity, in the tanks, and might have to use almost all of it on the final dash to Manhattan, in a few days.

So, Steven dropped the Paradise into the narrow valley beyond the second ridge northeast of Harrisburg. He saw a narrow dirt road down the center of it that lead back toward the Susquehanna, through the farmland and small town on its eastern bank.

Steven found a meadow wide enough to allow him to drop to about 20 feet off the deck, and the crew slung a rope from a winch above a hatch in the back of the rear gondola. Henrietta made the rappel, Aurelia made the rappel look good, and Claudia made it to about 10 feet off the ground before she lost her grip and started to fall.

As Aurelia tried to shout instructions, Claudia managed to twist herself around enough to end up in a classic five-point paratrooper landing – knees, elbows and forehead. The fall left her dazed and winded, but not that much worse for wear, albeit with a stained skirt, scraped elbows and a knot on her forehead already poulticed with a splotch of weeds and orange mud.

After a few seconds, Claudia scrambled to her feet as those who remained in the dirigible lowered the packs and gear. The three ladies shouldered their burdens and, despite the fact that they’d finally managed to get out of the cramped confines of gondolas, the grumpy Claudia started to complain about her sore head as they trudged down what would someday be Pennsylvania Route 325 toward the Susquehanna River.

Above them, the Paradise rose slowly into the dawn sky, to find a fairly still section of air that would allow them to drift very slowly eastwards until the portal to the Realm of Jupiter opened, three days hence.

With that, the session ended.

Funny Quotes

GM (discussing Sunmi’s status): She’s ridden off into solo-adventure land.
Jeff (OOC): God help the world!

Aurelia: I just don’t consider Izzy and Heck monsters. I mean, I know they are, but they’re our monsters, and they’re Jimmy’s friends!

Aurelia: If we can sail above all the culture, I’m there!

Henrietta (in response to a question about sending someone to buy newspapers): Send the NPCs! I got stuff to do! Training for France takes precedence over scouting New York!

GM: There’s no plan, you’re just going.
Jeff (OOC): That’s the plan!

Claudia: I’m okay! There’s nobody looking for me. I just accidentally snapped somebody’s neck. That’s all!
Bennie Rae (OOC): What does that say about the campaign, that the person who is the most low-key only accidentally broke somebody’s neck?

Aurelia: It’s the never-ending question; how much salt and cinnamon do we carry through the portal?
A.J.: We always need salt.
Henrietta: There has to be salt.

(The group sees the large Cossack raiding party, below.)
Aurelia: It’s the Prime Directive: “We got s**t to do.”

Jeff (OOC): We’re the protagonists, not the heroes!

A.J.: Anybody want to see the Pro Football Hall of Fame? Because we’re gonna fly right over Canton, Ohio!

Henrietta: Over the river and through the woods, to New York City we go!

Aurelia: Hold on, wait! Don’t let go! Let go now! No, don’t! Aah! Oh, honey….

So, they're planning on heading into the Orbital Realm of Jupiter while almost out of fuel? I think trying to acquire some first might be wise.

Probably, but as noted in the quotes, they really didn't plan, very much.

So... basically they stole the dirigible in order to save themselves having to fabricate an aluminum frame and acquire helium.

Oh, and they'll be completely rebuilding it from the ground up at some point.

So...

I believe these two quotes sum up the party completely:

To be honest, Anten was pretty clear, from the get-go, that the technology in the 1919 world wasn't advanced enough to let them get to Kashmir, and then through the Shangri-La portal. He'd actually been contemplating the portal to the Orbital Realm of Jupiter, for awhile.

However, Arthur has points for devotion to Sunmi's welfare, so Anten had to play it out, and at least try to see what A.J. could accomplish. He also pointed out that, if the rest of the group had been willing to fast-forward for a year of game-time, he could have modified the stolen dirigible enough that they might make it.

The rest of the party wasn't willing to do that. The agreement to investigate the events in the 1711 world was hanging over them, and would give them access to a lot more spells -- including some very useful options, and not just for combat.

The desire to secure access to the expanded spell lists got quite a bit more urgent when Hops About and Circles Thrice showed up, again, with their message. The group is fairly certain the two nunupi sold their favor to someone significant in the Unseelie Court, and they want to have as many options available, as possible.

That, combined with Rebecca's de facto decision to bow out of the campaign in favor of her drum-and-bugle corps activities -- which eliminated the need to go to Shangri-La -- made them want to move ahead with the mission to France.

(Rebecca may play again, and she may not. She's an attractive 18-year-old young woman, with everything that implies, and there's a lot to be said for traveling around the country all summer -- at least, from her point of view.)

At that point, yeah.

Now then, the session mostly consisted of an info dump and bookkeeping for those who showed up. Everybody kind of wanted to move things forward, by the end of the evening.

We should have a fuller house, next time around. At that point, I'll have everybody select the spells they've stashed away in tattoos and fetishes, and make the RPM rolls.

Tisa has already said Claudia would probably focus on technomagic spells, again, and Anten may say A.J. does the same thing.

So, they'll have a few more resources than is indicated, here -- but not by much.

Just shaking my head at their actions.

But, they do seem to be doing somewhat better on trying to fit in. But I'm not holding my breath that it stays that way if they encounter any trouble. And I was wondering what or how they were going to change the justification for the theft of the dirigible since the primary reason that I could remember (Sunmi) wasn't there anymore. Not a bad change given the OOC reasons.

Nice info dump there, they've gathered a lot of interesting information but I wonder if they will apply it in a useful manner.

I will admit that if I was playing a character in this, my character would probably be staying behind, but then a good bit of what they've done over the past while would be things I've got problems with. On the other hand, it's still lots of fun as an outside observer to read their misadventures and make comments on them. ;-)

They didn't acquire helium: it was inflated with hydrogen when they stole it, and they let that escape. All they got was a framework, really.

All the news that fits, we print. The New Amsterdam Times War successful in all theaters!
September 20, 1919

Eisenhower’s troops penetrate Nova España capitol, Santa Fe!

Santa Fe, Colonia de Nova España – American troops under the command of Col. Dwight E. Eisenhower seized the railyards in southern Santa Fe, yesterday.

Already rendered unusuable by artillery bombardment for the past week, the capture ensures the capitulation of Santa Fe, the northern capitol of the Colony of New Spain.

In a statement today, Gen. Douglas MacArthur, commander of the Rio Cimarron theater of operations and Col. Eisenhower’s direct superior, said the operation also makes the supply situation “untenable” for Spain on the western end of the front.

“The decision to attack from the western side of the Rocky Mountains has succeeded beyond expectations,” MacArthur said.

In addition to its status as the northern administrative center of Spain’s empire in North America, Santa Fe served as the primary supply center for the Rio Cimarron Front, for more than 200 miles east of its fortified base in the Rocky Mountain foothills.

Should Col. Eisenhower capture the city in its entirety, as seems almost ineveitable, it could force the Spanish into general retreat as the front collapses at its strongest point.

The Times has learned that the secret operation began in May, as soon as the snow had melted enough in the passes through the mountains. It started with the capture of the indian city of Valle Grande (Spanish for Big Valley), near the headwaters of the Rio Grande del Norte.

Col. Eisenhower then had his troops push rapidly southwards, in an effort to reach the fertile valleys southwest of Santa Fe, before the desert weather became too hot and the streams dried up.

The Rio Grande del Norte is the largest river that flows down the west side of the Rocky Mountains, and Col. Eisenhower’s attack paralleled its course.

The U.S. troops reached the valleys of the Rio San Juan, by the middle of July, only a week behind schedule, as scattered resistance by the surprised Spanish proved ineffective.

By the middle of August, the majority of Col. Eisenhower’s 50,000 men had pushed deep into the farm lands in the Rio San Juan valleys, and pioneers began to improve the roadway south from Valle Grande.

Gen. MacArthur ordered Valle Grande placed under martial law upon its capture.

U.S. Navy clearing harbor channel in Santiago de Cuba
Pershing pauses after city’s capture

Santiago de Cuba – U.S. Navy divers began efforts to refloat the Spanish destroyer, Argonauta, scuttled in the narrow channel out of the harbor of this city, three days ago.

Spanish sailors captured during the battle with the U.S. fleet at the mouth of the harbor, last month, reported the vessel’s captain, Guillermo de la Paz de Rodriguez, ordered the vessel scuttled.

The harbor at Santiago de Cuba offers one of the best anchorages on this largest island in the Caribbean.

The current port facilities used by the U.S. Navy at Guantanamo, to support Gen. John Pershing’s efforts to capture the island, are considered inadequate.

The harbor at Santiago de Cuba, itself, is deep enough to allow even the largest of the U.S. ships to dock at the city’s modern port facilities.

Capture of the city was considered of utmost importance both by Pershing and by Admiral Henry B. Wilson, commander of the U.S. Navy’s Atlantic Fleet.

The harbor had served as the primary base for Spain’s Caribbean Armada, and the arrival of the U.S. fleet had found many of that fleet’s ships at the anchorage.

The Spanish initially declined to sortie out and take on the attacking American ships, instead relying on the protection of the harbor fortifications.

Last month, the situation for the Spanish had grown dire. Pershing’s troops completed the encirclement of Santiago de Cuba from the north, and began to bring up artillery, as the American fleet began to lob shells into the harbor more often.

Russian raid damages railroad

200 killed by Cossacks

Cheyenne, Wyoming – The raid by several hundred Russian Cossacks two days ago killed more than 200 people, including many women and children, Wyoming Governor Robert D. Carey reported, today.

The raid also cut the main railroad line that ran between the mines at Butte, Montana, and the factories southwards, in the Colorado cities of Denver and Pueblo.

Early reports of the raid began two days ago, and Wyoming National Guard cavalry rushed to respond. In addition, U.S. Army regular cavalry began to arrive by train in Cheyenne, later in the day.

The raiders have been pushed back toward the mountains, but fighting continues in the foothills.

However, during the raid, the Russian cavalry not only cut the railroad line, the Cossacks also burned many farms and small towns in western Wyoming.

In addition, there have been some reports of atrocities, but so far no reporter has managed to reach the areas raided to confirm those reports.

Raiders reportedly tore up the railroad lines, heated them in bonfires made from the railroad ties, and then twisted them around telegraph poles. Such actions have not been seen since the Civil War.

Hamby is in haste to die

Convicted of the murder of De Witt C. Paul, paying teller of the East Brooklyn Savings Bank, last December, Gordon F. Hamby said last night his only worry was that there might be a delay in his electrocution.

Informed that he probably will be dead in a few weeks, he seemed more cheerful.

“That’ll be all right. It will let me carry the news of the Willard-Dempsey fight to the boys on the other side,” he said.

Boston police threaten strike

Officers with the Boston Police Department again threatened to strike, yesterday, unless the city accepts a proposed policeman’s union.

Boston Police Commissioner Edwin U. Curtis demanded that officers remain on their jobs, and said a strike during wartime would amount to “treason” against the United States of America.

Massachusetts Governor Calvin Coolidge also promised to send his state’s national guard troops to maintain order, should the police officers follow through with their threats.

Boston police have threatened to strike because they claim stagnant wages have not kept pace with cost of living increases.

Midwest begins storm cleanup

People in Iowa, Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky began efforts to rebuild after terrible storms swept the midwest, earlier this week.

Flooding destroyed homes throughout the region, and all states reported at least several cyclones that caused further damage.

According to latest reports, the storms killed 311 people in all four states, as well as many livestock animals, and damaged any number of fields and farms.

Estimates by the state governments indicate the storm inflicted damages in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
