Default GURPS Space Atlas(es) question

Something that came up on Twitter: a question for anyone who owns the atlases.

Just curious.

Are any of them based on the locations and specifics of actual stars (before added sci-fi/gaming elements), or are they made up to be inserted in adventures wherever they're needed?

It was suggested that I take the question to the forums.

Thanks.

I don't think so. However I do know that many of the worlds in Atlas 1 and 3 were taken from Classic Traveller supplements (and expanded on of course).

The answer is "no". The closest they get to a real astrographic reference is Space Atlas 4 which describes the Phoenix and Saga sectors as being on the edge of the gap between the Orion and Perseus arms of the the galaxy and isn't even clear about which side of the gap they are on.

Speaking of the series, #4 was recently released in PDF:

Thank you! I’ve been running my TOS Star Trek game in the Saga Sector, and a pdf searchable copy is most welcome.

Don’t let anyone tell you GURPS doesn’t have any sci-if setting books. Any one of the Space Atlas series is enough to get a space opera campaign going. Each world description usually contains two adventure seeds.

I love having them all as PDFs now.

I think that this showing up on Twitter was what prompted the original inquiry there.
