This thread makes it hard to get that Midnight Oil song out of my head.

If there aren't any dwarves in a dwarven mine
I'd be wondering why...
Still I walk up and down through the dwarven mine
There'll be loot in my pocket tonight

Pumps to prevent flooding (unless they're operating entirely above the water table - which is possible if they're half way up a mountain)

One of those things that get forgotten at times:
  • "Outhouses" - wood or stone board with a hole in it over your standard issue 10'-adventurer-catching pit, with whatever privacy partitions dwarves may or may not want.
  • The unfortunate sod who has to empty the pits, and his tools. Buckets and shovels, but I'm thinking a chain-bucket loop would be more dwarfy than just a bucket on a rope ;)
  • The cart for moving the nightsoil
  • some place to process/rot the nightsoil before using it as a growth medium for... mushrooms probably. And probably composting other materials as well. You'll need good ventilation here because of the methane and heat being generated - both of which are pollution in a mine.
  • The farm where the product of the composting is used. Regular mushrooms, fantasy giant mushrooms, regular old crops under weird artificial lights?

One of those things I like about Skyrim is that every dungeon with people in it has a private little corner with a candle, a bucket, and usually a book to read :)

Nah, that's way too laborious, plus these are dwarves we're talking about. The pits connect to a slanted tunnel going to the fungus farms. This requires that they be on the lowest levels, but since fungi don't need sunlight, this isn't a problem.

Reactions?
The idea is excellent. The following suggested applications into a campaign are novel, but are extraneous to my setting requirements. But this does then imply that there will be dwarven shipwrights, shipyards, slipways and the like. Ta muchly.

Wow. This is cool. Didn't really think about mushrooms and fungi*.However, I had similar ideas regarding gnomes. Which is a tangent I may investigate in another discussion.

* Which is bemusing because I try to include discussion in my training workshops.

A modified hydraulic ram may do the trick. Will discuss with my RPG group tonight, as some of them are alternative energy technology wonks.

Yeah. More crypt-like, and gives the potential for more relics in dwellings.

Ha. Great opportunity for a reworking of that song. Trivia: the lead singer of Midnight Oil is currently Australia's Education Minister.
