3D Printing?
Hey folks -
Has anyone made STL files for roads and other terrain features? I saw the thread where the fella is selling but I know at least a few of us have 3D printers, and it would be pretty cool to print out our own, even if the STL files were for sale at a reasonable rate. Thoughts? |

the combat garage is in the early stages of 3D car design, if you haven't checked it out try it

If you haven't beaten me to it, you can find it at carwars.opentools.org

After you've finished creating a design (or have loaded a saved design), there'll be an icon near the right side of the bottom toolbar that lets you preview [in 360x360 3D] and download the STL file.

Re: 3D Printing?
Yeah, the 3D features are pretty basic -- There are only two bodies (sedan and pickup) and I haven't modeled most of the guns and stuff (IIRC you can show front-mounted guns and turreted guns of one or two types). But you can generate an STL for any configuration it displays in the 3D view, and then 3D print it. Just be prepared for gun barrels to not be too sturdy -- I figured if I were going to do this "for real" the barrels would have to be monstrously large just to be tough enough to not droop or break off.
Anyway, it was mostly a proof of concept. If 3D printers become more common, I can put more work into it. Or if someone else feels like chipping in a bunch of 3D models for the equipment and side-facing weapons and so on. :) At the moment I'm 3D printing dungeons for D&D (soon I'll be able to say "for Dungeon Fantasy," perhaps), which at a 1" per figure scale are more economical. 2" per figure for Car Wars 6 is 4x the time and cost, not to mention arenas are often quite a bit larger than sections of a dungeon need to be. If you stated the physical dimensions of an arena you'd like, I could estimate the cost to build it out of modular snap-together tiles, based on what I'm doing for fantasy. It's generally 10s of cents per 2"x2" tile, for instance, so for a 36"x36" arena, 324 tiles, on the order of $100. Maybe a bit less if it's all flat in the middle, but honestly, what fun is that? :) |
