Default Gnome ability with Mate?

The Gnome's special ability states that "you may play one monster from your hand as a one-shot illusion, adding its level to yours." Can I play a monster, then play Mate, thereby giving me a second monster's level to add to my combat bonus? Since Mate states "Another monster appears" I did not cast an additional monster. Will this work to my advantage or add another monster attacking me?

The monster that you use becomes a One-shot Illusion. It is no longer a monster, so you cannot target it with Mate. The Illusion simply adds its level to the Gnome's combat strength and cannot be modified, joined or enhanced in any way.

MunchkinMan made this official mentioning that it is not able to be enhanced here.

Yes, but if I was to use the card "Illusion" to replace a monster during any combat, that monster is still a monster and could have the Mate card used on it.

The card Illusion and the Gnome "Illusion" ability have different rules and don't work the same. MunchkinMan's answer is correct and official.

I have asked this question else where with no answer yet but would another modifier work on a gnomes monster? Could I play a +5 underdressed card or could other players play -5 depressed modifiers? In one sense it's different than a mate because this is the actual level of the monster changing but in the other it's still an illusion. Any clarity?

The post from MunchkinMan that's linked in the earlier answer says you cannot modify the Illusion in that way.
