Re: Thrown spells maximum range
I've been thinking about adding an option to compensate for the fall-off in spell potency (i.e. the range-based DX penalties) by using additional ST in the casting. My initial thought is to apply this as a 1-for-1 trade... 1 point of extra ST to eliminate 1 point of negative adjDX (applicable to thrown spells only).

Re: Thrown spells maximum range
Sounds like my Aid spell suggestion, above. Round 1: cast Aid to raise your DX however many points you think you need; Round 2: cast the spell you have in mind.

Infinite DX Aid is first edition tactic, not legacy edition.

Re: Thrown spells maximum range
Similar outcome, but very different approach IMO... specifically one that doesn't rely on external assistance.

Re: Thrown spells maximum range
I don't let wizards cast AID on themselves (one of my own houserules), but I have been considering extending the initial duration for several spells. Perhaps limiting the target to one's self could boost this duration a bit.

Re: Thrown spells maximum range
Quote:
Aid (T): Temporarily adds 1 to ST, DX, or IQ of any figure (including wizard himself) for each 1 ST the wizard uses to cast it. Lasts 2 turns. If ST is given to another figure (for instance, to allow another wizard to cast a spell with a very high ST cost), that ST must be used within 2 turns, or it is lost. That obviously permits the tactic of 'self aid' to raise DX, for the purpose of spell casting or any other purpose. |

Re: Thrown spells maximum range
Note also ITL 162: "Other effects – like potions and Aid spells – are cumulative with magic items, but only to the limit of 5. You could have a DX +3 ring, and have a +3 Aid spell cast on you – and both would help, but increasing your DX only to +5."
So Aid can only add 5 to DX, up to a limit of adjDX 14.

Re: Thrown spells maximum range
Where does it say 'up to the limit of adjDX 14'?
