Usable Once Only Items

If I am fighting a monster and have placed some "Usable Once Only" items that would make me win the fight, but other players gives the monster boost so it will be stronger then me.

Will all the "Usable Once Only" I would have used on myself return to my "Backpack" because I am trying to run away or will they get discarded?
