Backpack???
In several games the notion of a backpack came up. The correct usage of this backpack was absolutely unclear.
Is it possible to put as many items as one pleases into the backpack? Is it possible to put an items in and out of the backpack during the same round? Can i put big items like ships into a backpack? |

Re: Backpack???
This can be a confusing topic, especially when unofficial terms are being used.
There is no official "backpack" in Munchkin. Some people use that word to indicate the status of items that are in play and being carried but not being used. Any card on the table is "in play." Any item card on the table is "carried." Any item card on the table that is not being "used" (also "worn") is turned sideways to indicate that you are not using the bonus/effect from that item. Big items can be carried but not used. Remember, however, that you may normally only carry one Big item at a time (ships and steeds do not count against this limit). In regards to your specific question about ships, the rules say that you can normally only have one ship. I'll let our Munchkin experts specify whether that means in play or in use.

Re: Backpack???
So "Carried" items would technically be in your "Backpack".
If you call it a backpack though, people can get confused, because there is a backpack curse. Not sure of its exact name in english, since I have the french version, but it's the "backpack" I thought of when I read the topic title. |

Re: Backpack???
No. Your backpack holds items that are carried but not used.

Isn't that exactly what I said? "Carried" items would be in your "Backpack". sounds an awful lot like "Your backpack holds items that are carried" Carried = Not Used Carried = "In Backpack". But because of the confusion a "backpack" can create, it is only stated that they are "Carried". Used = Obviously Carried, but also worn/equipped. Carried =/= items you have in your hand, the above terms are all about items that are "in play", on the table. |

Re: Backpack???
No, it's not. All item cards on the table are "carried," whether you're using/wearing them or not. The items in your backpack are the ones that are "carried but not used."
See how confusing this can be when we get it mixed up with terminology from other games?

Re: Backpack???
If you're wearing a piece of armor, obviously you're carrying it, and obviously, it cannot be in the backpack at the same time. That's why we only use "Carried" and "Used" as terms, and nothing is "In the backpack" so as to clear possible confusion.

***sighs and lays his head on the massive pile of game books that surround his desk and litter the floor around his game room***
Backpack = Bag of Holding. IE: The loot bag that you have everything that you come across that is not nailed down. And if you have a pry bar, them things too. If you can't use it and don't want to give it away, you put it there. It's a game term. Sounds better than "sideboard" or "stick it over to the side, on its side to show that you have it, but cant use it". It is, after all is said and done, a game about Gamer Adventures. *** Goes back to the Fritz Lieber adventures from TSR and the fun that they will invoke in our next adventure.***

Re: Backpack???
All Items in front of you, whether currently being used or not, are "Carried" Items. Some Carried Items are being used, some aren't. The ones not being used are sometimes referred to as "being in the backpack," but that term is deprecated in rule discussions because it's not formally defined.
