Default compatibility

Just play my first game not too long ago and i really enjoyed it. As i went to order the game for my self i found a bunch of different versions. Would the core set and the zombie set be able to mix together to make one stack of cards to play with or are there different rules to prevent this?

Every Munchkin set is inherently similar, with the same types of cards and what not. They can all be mixed together fairly easily, though some will mix better than others, due to something like character cards. It's also not recommended to mix any expansions in unless you have the base set those expansions belong to.

Fantasy Munchkin (our nickname for the core set) and Zombies go together pretty well. Mojos get added into the Races & Classes, and there's a lean toward Undead monsters. Go for it, if you'd like, or buy up the many expansions for the core set. They're a load of fun. :)

Combining different sets is a somewhat advanced topic, so I'd like to divert further discussion of it to the main Munchkin forum. The 101 answer is "Yes, and most sets play nicely together."
