Default Empowered Scrolls

This topic may already be on this forum somewhere. I had thought that Scrolls, when cast, took their power from the scroll and not the caster. So I suggest the following:

IQ17 Empower Scroll (S) Wizard must have Write Scroll as prerequisite.

Lets wizard amend a scroll so that it will self power when casting. The wizard must know the spell he is empowering.
This Empowerment declaration is added to the end of the original scroll or on the back side. The wizard, using any needed ingredients, basically casts the spell into the scroll. It takes 5 minutes to and successful DX roll to accomplish. Failure means the spell went off (you can control its direction) and ruins the scroll. You are also fatigued the full affect of the spell.

Note: You could also create a new Empowered Scroll by doing the Write Scroll and immediately do the Empower Scroll right after.

ST cost: Whatever the spell costs on the spell list.

Empowered Scroll

Like Scrolls, ITL p141, except that:

Anyone can attempt to read a magic Empowered scroll (non-wizards are at -3). The person must be literate and that it is in a language he knows. Casting penalty for Spell higher than IQ still applies.

If the caster makes his DX roll, the spell comes off normally and the caster is not fatigues. The knowledge comes from the scroll, and the strength Empowerment comes from the scroll. Thus a caster can cast an empowered spell that would require more ST than he has available.

Unless written or marked on case or side of scroll, one would not know that it is empowered. However, Analyze magic would tell you.

Prices for Empowered scrolls cost double the amount of regular magic scrolls.

Requires one gem with a value of $50 embedded in the scroll per point of ST the spell requires. These gems will be consumed in the casting. (To align with gems of summoning and such.)

I agree with that. However, it could also be a gem crushed into a crystalline powder and adhered to the scroll.

Or special ink?

Or you could just adopt house rule that the scroll spell parameters are already set and the ST is paid for at creation. All that is needed is a successful reading.

Ooo, cool story element idea...

Empowered scroll = Blood Scroll.

By ITL 83, ITL 61 and ITL 9, a half-pint of humanoid blood is 1 ST and $70.

A blood scroll is written on humanoid skin (Orc is preferred due to the durability) with the writer's own blood.

The entire cost to cast and maintain the spell must be paid up front in blood so the scroll takes one week to write for every three ST to be put into the spell (the writer makes one DX roll per week).

Anyone who is literate in the language written may cast from a blood scroll (as they don't provide their own ST), but non-wizards roll one additional die in the casting.

Wow, that's a great idea! I've always loved consumable magic.

What about another spell that creates just a one-shot magic item with no reading required? Maybe IQ 19, in between lesser and greater magic item creation?
