If I recall correctly, our Saxon ancestors* divided humanity (mann) into waepanmann (those that bear arms - males) and wofemann (those that weave - females) so it would certainly seem to be a valid cultural assumption. There have been plenty of tribal societies where any (free) male is expected to bear arms. And a good few post tribal ones as well. Actual warriors may be a separate caste or subset, but all men may well be expected to take part in conflict if required.
