So, we've all had our moments of glory, but what was your most embarrassing moment? For me, I'd had six back to back victories (in the last game I'd destroyed three of the four other cars in the event). High on my previous achievements, and thinking myself untouchable, I rolled into an area talking much trash, after easily avoiding the shots of several of my long time rivals (who were all gunning for me), a brand new player (a guy named Kevin Scott), to a pop shot at my tire, with an VMG loaded with HD ammo (while I was hauling a$$ at roughly 50 MPH). He not only hits me, but manages blow out my damn tire, I blow my control roll, and I crash into a TV bunker, which takes out my front armor, taking me out of the event. And to cap it off, I'd hadn't even fired a shot in anger. Not one of my crowning moments.

My most embarassing moment was trying to 90-degree into an alley on a town map at some stupid speed, fumbling the control roll and skidding 1.5", then proceeding to plough my way through the hospital with my ram plate.
I was supposed to be DEFENDING the town, not levelling it... |

Reminds me of a race in New Boston. I lost control on my last loop and wound up rolling down the corridor at ~160, scraping the walls all the way. One phase before I would have crossed the finish line a "not a ram car" blocked the path and I turned into confetti on my next move.
More annoying than embarrassing, really, but it shows that it took us a while to get a balanced set of racing rules.

My most embarrassing moment was playing against a friend at University, a looong time ago (yeah, we were supposed to be in the Maths lecture, which might also explain why I failed Maths).
He came at me with an ATG in the nose of his car. When I did a panicky avoidance, he showed it to be a fake. Haha. When he turned away and I didn't worry enough about cover, he demonstrated another little trick: in his back was a hidden ATG - a real one. Ah, those were the days... |

Running a campaign my sophmore year of college reminded me of my lack of Car Wars skill, since I spent so much more time designing than playing.
It began by setting the PCs up against a tough arena group challenge that was something like a world championship. I failed on the tactics and the firepower heavy NPC team with semis got taken out by good shooting by the PCs. Then one player, who had made a nifty little car building program, found some of the sponson mount rules in ADQ and built a nasty little helicopter with the winnings from the event. The PCs pretty much destroyed every cycle gang after that. Since they were building up their own little gang and a mob-backed cycle gang was the main enemy, well the campaign became less awesome. That and I introduced my first real Car Wars character, Frosty the Gunman (he Carlos El Alisal at the time due to a school project and a need to rename him) and he was seen as an annoying thunderstealer. I never GMed for that group again. . .

Mine happened long ago, when it was legal to mount ATGs to the left/right of a non-oversized vehicle. In fact, it was at Origins in a qualifier for Worlds.
I had originally mounted the ATG to the front, but just before getting the car approved by the ref, I moved it to the left arc. During the duel, I fired it from my forward arc. I missed or did minimal damage. Next turn, when I was going to fire again, I realized my error. The ref wasn't happy, but as I recall, none of the other players were too upset. I actually won the duel, but died quickly in the next round. Getting ganged up on SUCKS! Dave |

Showing up to the "World" Championship at GENCON wearing "Groucho"
glasses, doing the Groucho Walk, and waggling a training 30-mm cannon shell as a cigar. The saving grace being: There were three others there, so I didn't exactly stand out. And since the next step in the process was Handing Craig Sheeley A Turnip With A Note In It, any embarrassment I may have felt was shortly to be steamrollered by Mr. Sheeley's Reaction. And thus was the Japanese Protectorate War foisted upon the _CW_-playing membership of the convention....

Our first couple of games, my friend and I didn't catch that weapons could only fire once per second - we thought it was once per phase. Duelling with Mini-Shermans, I got him to flip over onto his roof, a sure mobillity kill. So, like an idiot, I drive straight at the front of his upside-down car, both of us firing our linked MGs at each other once per phase (and no, we weren't smart enough to think that maybe the guy hanging upside down in his car would have any penalties to hit). He blow away each other's front armor, but he gets the shot in that kills my MG and the driver. My uncontrolled Sherman gently coasts to a stop 1/2" in front of his car.
