...a thread sort of inspired by Gollum's comments in another thread....sort of...
GURPS can be used to portray both average people and Heroic Adventurers(!) With that in mind I propose that many, many charactrers have GURPS moments or transition moments (or events) where they switched from being 'average' into adventurer or Hero status. Maybe these events should be discussed and noted by Gms and players at the start of campaigns. In both real life and fiction you can find these moments /events. In real life: Greg Kelly was a pilot with the U.S. Marines during Desert Storm, then he became an average or normal TV reporter...then he got on a major News Network and reported live from Baghdad in 2003 while embedded with the troops. His bio:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greg_Kelly So, in some games Mr. Kelly might be considered normal while he is reporter - but he sure wound up in plenty of adventuring situations before, during asnd after that time period. A working pilot with relevent training saves the lives of his passengers and crew by landing on a river. (earlier this year) A police officer, wife and mother, during her normal daily routine gets a call about a situation - and responds in a way that potentially saves the lives of dozens of people. In fiction movies & TV: A plane crashes on an island. Two or three people step up and become leaders for the first time in their lives. A luxury liner cruise ship capsizes and 4 to 6 passengers deecide to try and rescue themselves and others. There are plenty more GURPS moments like those that turn average folks into Hero! types. Can anyone think of more examples? - Ed Charlton

Something like this happened to the guy I grew up across the street from on his honeymoon, and he and the wife pulled a few people out with them. He was always an athletic high-achiever type, though, so IMHO it was more that circumstances caught up with him than some kind of sudden transition on his part.

I was referring to the set-up of the old movie THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE. (with Ernest Borgnine, Gene Hackman, Roddy McDowell,...) - Ed
