Maybe throw in some Hanna-Barberra Wacky Races.
I've been wanting to get my gaming group to play GURPS again, and the recent Speed Racer movie inspired me. The general idea is that the campaign is space opera, concerning a team of automobile racers that travel from planet to planet (and space station to space station). They race in various events part of some interplanetary racing league (thinking of a good, cheesy name for that). Some people might be the main drivers, others might be the ship pilot, the team doctor, the manager and PR guy. The important thing i think is making sure everyone is doing something during a race even if they don't want to make there character a racer. So there could be hidden snipers, or other things that needs them, maybe super death traps they have to disarm, or scariest ofa ll, they could have to do interviews with the press. I'm thinking having everyone start at 225CP, a -50 CP disad limit. Most of the group is not very experienced at GURPS so i'm going to give them a good amount of templates to choose from. Most of those are pretty obvious (racecar drivers.) others i think will show up as i develop the setting more. Ideas? Insults? other I words? |

I might well consider mandating a limit on how much signature gear the PCs can start with. This is a game setting where Equipment may mean more than many character traits. You may well want to keep what is available to the PCs under tight control.

It might suit you to come up with some Driving/Racing techniques.
I dont know if there are any from Car Wars, but off the top of my head... Nudge - Impact another car in an effort to cause them to loose control Draft - Drive Close enough to the rear of another car to cut wind resistance and conserve fuel Jump - Measure Accuracy and increase distance (ala fzero) of jumps off of ramps. Drift - Maintain High RPMs and a small turn radius in the motor for the price a reduction in control. Dig - touch the wing/side of your vehicle to the ground. The friction reduces the turn radius, but reduces speed as well. Nymdok |

With the way I'm thinking of the game world, and because they did so in the Speed Racer movie inexplicably, I like the idea of them driving around in their race cars on the street. At the same time I have to make sure I can still sell the idea of an interstellar society even having automobiles for personal transportation anymore. Quote:

I'm not sure if they are available outside of Japan yet (wouldn't be surprised) or what title they are under if they are (probably F-Zero as that is what the game titles were translated to), but you might want to try finding the Falcon Densetsu (aka the original name for F-Zero) anime series.
Edit: A quick search says that it was sold as F-Zero: GP Legend. Trivia: Falcon Densetsu means fairly literally Legend of the Falcon or Falcon Legend.
