Halfling Hireling Recovering Discarded Item w/ Enhancement

Halfling Hireling says something about, after getting him he will recover the next Item you discard. A player had recently played this, and had not yet used it to recover a discarded item. Someone played the Curse on them that made them discard the card that gives them the biggest bonus. This was some +4 Dwarf weapon (I forget which) that had a +2 Blessed on it. Of course the Halfling Hirelings ability kicked in, and the player was allowed to recover the +4 weapon, but we couldn't figure out if the +2 Blessed should come with it, or stay discarded. We ended up deciding that it would stay discarded, because the Halfling Hireling reads as if he recovers the Item after it (and its Enhancement) have been discarded. If it had said that it actually prevented the player from discarding the Item, I think the enhancement would stay, but since it seems like it would actually hit the discard, and then be recovered, we ruled the enhancement would be lost. We're still pretty unsure on this though, what do you guys think?
