Default No default for Brawling?

Why does Brawling have no default? How do you model an attack by someone who has no fighting skills?

Attack at skill DX+0. Normal punching damage. No Brawling damage bonus.

Ah, okay. That sounds reasonable. Thank you. Can anyone point to where that is specified in the text?

Page B271, in the Equipment chapter, it lists the damage for Punching, Kicking, and Biting by skill used; in all three, it lists DX (or DX-2 for Kicking) as a roll needed.

For details, see Unarmed Combat (p. B370) and particularly Striking, which refers you to p. B271 for stats. You use Brawling when you want to be able to strike at better than DX, get a damage bonus, and/or take advantage of such techniques as Elbow Strike and Knee Strike. Otherwise, you use DX (or DX-2 for a kick).

Is it also fair to say that having Brawl gives you an unarmed Parry, where as just using DX gives no Parry capability?

Thanks

Those without unarmed combat skills may parry at (DX/2)+3; see Parrying Unarmed (p. B376). However, this parry isn't "ambidextrous" and doesn't allow you to parry one attack per hand at no penalty -- unlike Boxing, Brawling, and Karate parries. And of course you can't improve it.

You mean Enhanced Parry is linked to the skill while WM is linked to the weapon?

I'm fairly sure he means "There's no skill to buy up." I mean, you could improve it by buying up DX even, so yes, it can be "improved". It's just damn expensive.
