How about supplying the PCs with the GURPS Prime Directive: Deck Plans #1 - Klingon G1 Gunboat?

Just tell them its Jump-3 Maneuver-3.

Jump-1 is Warp 5.5 while Jump-3 is Warp 8.

I don't think the G-1 can make Warp 8. ;-)

My PCs have used Scout ships, mostly, with the occasional Empress Marava (we don't usually do the merchant style campaign).

But right now they are travelling to Glisten in a giant passenger liner. High passage and all the comforts of home. A new system every week, and also adventure to be had among the many passengers. I find that I actually like the PCs don't have a ship approach.

A Firefly-Class Mid-Sized Bulk Transport of course.

The idea of a party without a ship sounds interesting. I don't know what I'd do with a long fixed route, but a party with an expense account and a mission could be interesting.
