Steven Brust's To Reign in Hell.

Definitely not Anne Rice's Angel Time.

A friend of mine recently pointed me to the Bobby Dollar novels by Tad Williams. I would strongly recommend The Dirty Streets of Heaven for everyone interested in In Nomine.

American Gods by Neil Gaiman could easily represent a variant of the setting where Ethereals have a little more leeway to visit the Corporeal world. Or where, perhaps, the banality of the modern age has squeezed the flow of essence to Heaven so that Angels are hurting almost as bad as Ethereals.

Seconded. For a moment, I wondered if Tad had a shades-of-gray campaign going.
