Default bucklers and unarmed combat

I am running a campaing of gurps zombies. And one of the characters is a street boxer how is wants to use a buckler. I don't think is fair to make him buy buckler as a skill becouse he has a lot of poits invested in boxing skill and at least to me look that attack and "parry" with a buckler is not that diferrent than parry with the hands..

So do you guys think is reasonable use a perk like weapon adaptation to this ?

PS: sorry about the shity english its not my firs language...

For whatever reason GURPS combat skills are very narrow. In real life all martial arts, armed and unarmed, have biomechanics in common, but GURPS mostly just calls that DX. What you probably want here is the Skill Adaptation (Buckler to Brawling) perk.

Agreed, although probably Skill Adaptation (Buckler to Boxing) in this specific case. At any rate, I think a Perk works well for what you're wanting to do.

I would probably draw a line at using it to punch and still getting the DB if you're using it with Brawling. And then just be lenient, i.e. no need to pay points. If you don't have Buckler at all, maybe you'll start with a familiarity penalty. And if you've got Improsived Weapons(Brawling), not even that.

But, yeah, bashing with Brawling while still using it defensively (i.e. Ready to Block and with a DB) sounds like a good case for an Adaption perk.

Being able to block with an unarmed striking skill at all should require it.

I thought it was mainly about adapting the skill for the bash, blocking with an unarmed skill that isn't Karate/Judo is still a bad idea, as you'd get the inherent penalties vs. weapons.

(You'd do fine against thrusting-only fencing weapons, so maybe this would be part of some silly student ritual sport style. Freshman gets a buckler, Senior get a rapier/smallsword)
