sw+3 would just be a feature of being a sword. Now, if you wanted to do sw+1d, you'd buy Cutting Attack 1 with ST-Based. Remember, an ally SHOULD have some disadvantages in their build.
Now, if you want to up the value of the sword, give it Imbue 3 and raise a few of the skills to meaningful levels. Now you have a really awesome sword worth charging points for.
