Normally armor is visible, and you can look at an animal and tell it has DR - the scales or armor plates give it away. Admittedly there is some inconsistence for low values of DR (tough skin), but that's the theory. If you have DR with No Signature, you can't tell by looking, and need something like a full medical exam or to actually try to cut into it to discover it.
