It stacks up immediately. Then, the second after you leave the area, you take 2d. The second after that, 1d.

It sounds like you are going to want to add Contact Agent, Blood Agent, or Respiratory Agent. Without it, each die of damage is going to be subject to DR. Also, if I were the GM, I would probably require a Resistible limitation.
