If so, would there be any penalties for Dave being almost entirely in cover (like an aimed shot to the head roll)?
Needs more information.

Is this a combat situation?

Is Adolph alerted that there is, or that there may be right now, some foe around?

Does Adolph have a ranged weapon out and ready, and has he been waiting ready to shoot it the instant anything appears?

How quickly is Dave moving up to the pillar? More than one hex per combat turn?

Did Dave pass through any hexes that weren't blocked by the pillar to get behind the pillar?

What relevant talents do Dave (e.g. Silent Movement, Stealth) or Adolph (e.g. Alertness, Acute Hearing) have? There are relevant rules and guidelines in those talent descriptions.

What armor and equipment is Dave wearing? That stuff can be noisy.

Is Dave carrying anything that gives off light?

Is Dave walking sideways to any light sources such that he would cast shadows on the floor?

How brightly lit is the hall?

How much other noise is there in the hall?

ALL of the answers to those questions could potentially change the answer to whether Dave gets detected, seen, or shot at.

(Even if he is seen, shooting a head that peeks around a corner tends to be at -6 to hit or worse, though if Dave is going quite slowly and Adolph notices his shadow and starts aiming correctly figuring out where the head is about to peek, it may be a lot easier.)
