Possible, but there will be a lot of extra space. The second map would only need about 6 rows of hexes (or roughly 1/3 of the mat). Obviously, the two parts can be adjusted to make the distribution more equal, but again, there's plenty of extra room.
Now, this room can be used for the CRT, stats for the various units (a la
Ogre Deluxe Edition 1987), and other info, but we still are talking paying for two mats, for a map that truly is only a little bigger than one.
