Hrm. All I can say is that the problem is not one I've seen, in a lot of play. Climate, perhaps?

If you are using wet-erase, they will probably be very blunt-tipped, even blunter than the ones that came with the set, and you may want to use tally marks on the side of the board rather than drawing numbers.

Grease pencils (aka china markers) work, too. A bit more scrubbing to remove, and don't get the cruft into the creases if you can help it. Would you believe China said they could not supply us with grease pencils for the game?

Potential china/china markers joke seen and bypassed.
