That's actually in line with what Israel does with foreign military equipment today. They tend to taylor things for urban and mountain combat, with much shorter supply lines. Something tough (lots of tread boxes), a little slower (M3), expected to be in supply (missiles), and carrying urban specialists (INF bay) all fit that.
