Welcome Calliban! I second Axyl's suggestion -- get the free Melee pdf.

I suggest reading it through once (it's only 24 pages) before looking at ITL, because it makes a great primer for the game mechanics. That way all the details you'll encounter in ITL will seem simpler because you'll already have a context for them.

Melee is the foundation -- everything else was built on top of it. And of course it's a really great stand-alone game too :)
