And coast watchers. Back when my dad was alive he was in US Sub Vet of WW II. They local chapter (DelMarVa) had two associate members, one British, one German. The German one was married to a American woman who was a coast watcher on the Chesapeake Bay during the war and probably saw his sub at one point. One of the things if you put it in fiction the editor would complain it was too unrealistic.
