Are they supposed to be shiny? Mine were never shiny... beat-to-hell, ragged, worn out looking things from the moment I put them on until they'd finally wear completely through the soles or blow out the sides...

Street bikes often have soft rubber covers on the shifter.
But for me the cringe comes just imagining the horror if one them laid that bike down at any reasonable highway speed. As often they also wear shorts and t-shirts...
