Crushing weapons have always been able to cause bleeding. I think gamers persistent delusion about this dates all the way back to the excuse for D&D cleric weapon choices and the story of about Archbishop Turpin not wanting to shed blood, though in the actual Song of Roland he seems fine with using a lance and cleaving shields in twain.
