I'm not looking to build lethal traps. In low-magic campaigns, healing is at a premium, and any damage can be consequential. For one thing, the setters of the traps can't always know who will trigger them, and it would be ... inconvenient ... if they triggered them themselves accidentally.

One nice thing about pit traps is they are easy to build and don't need much in the way of maintenance, which makes them more plausible to my way of thinking.
