Maybe I did a poor job describing poor Terry. The point was that Taylor could see at a glance that the criss-crossing scars over his entire body and various imperfectly healing crippling injuries were probably intensely painful. Just moving around would have hurt Terry incredibly and it looked like the accumulated damage from years. The odds were that pain was such a default state for Terry that it was probably extremely hard to stun him simply by causing him pain.*
So Taylor decided to go for structural damage. He did try a knockout blow, but man, Terry has one tough skull.
*GURPS terms, Terry was 99% likely to have High Pain Threshold, making it hard to take him out with any one attack, unless it caused unconsciousness or crippled a limb he needed.
