It says "in combat." Not "any combat." That means you must be in the combat to use it, and depending on which die you roll (the Munchkin or Monster) decides which side gets the bonus. So, if you're an unwitting helper, here's your chance to help the Monsters so your "partner" doesn't get to use you for all the glory he can muster from you.
