How is the Adventurers in Training dice pack supposed to work?

It comes with three big dice and two of the little purple dice. So do I get BOTH “in Training” on my side at the beginning of the game? Then the Big dice are just for me to roll as regular dice... obviously it appears I need to use “those” dice to use the rule with their Trainees to run away.
