I see the note that you do, and agree that the use of "can not be sold" there is a little confusing. On the same page, are the following two items:

Perhaps "can not be sold" means you can't trade cards in your hand for gold with another player. The verb used for exchanging items for levels is "discarding".

That's my take. Perhaps someone official will weigh in.
