ThinkGeek quite likely sells somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,000 to 100,000 times as much in a given year as Warehouse 23 does. (I don't have their sales numbers, obviously, but I can make an educated estimate.) They can afford to buy tens of thousands of units of those drives, which has a
huge impact on the price. SJ Games can afford to have a few
hundred of them made. Big difference.
But don't take my word for it, DDMC. Go contact a custom molding company. Tell them that you want to make 100 unique, molded thumb drives for your friends. Get a price estimate for everything, then divide by 100 to get your cost per unit.. Now double that (to get the
bare minimum you can sell something for an still cover your overhead -- you really want to triple it or more) for the retail price. Are you getting something in the $20, or something closer to the $200 range?
