Player: I attack the Ogre with my enchanted sword. (Player picks up some dice, and begins to shake them.)

GM: Okay, you miss.

Player: But I didn't even roll yet!

GM: Okay, maybe you hit. Doesn't matter. It causes no damage.

Player: But…

GM: Now the Ogre ignores you, and rumbles 4 feet forward. (GM rolls some dice.) You take 800 points of crushing damage. Oh, wait — sorry, I forgot your armor. Only 796 points of damage. Plus, your armor is completely destroyed. And so is everything else you were carrying.
