Personally, I'd blame the Norse ethereals for most of these items: Odin is associated with wolves, berserk rage, and shape-shifting powers. Several villains in the sagas also had wolfskin cloaks which allowed them to assume the animal's form. Their curse also tempts innocent heroes to use the cloaks, which are also Addictive in game terms (besides the Murderous/Angry side effect you mentioned). Of course, a few legendary figures have betrayed and killed their friends while in wolf form; the only way to break the Addiction (though not the other Discords) is to burn the skins to ash.
