In my mind, this was always one of the great strengths of early-edititon D+D; somehow they started with a system that had three meaningful monster stats (HD, AC, damage) and milked out of it several monster manuals that have remained core creative material for every fantasy roleplaying game you ever heard of. Ideas>>>stats, every time. This idea is central to TFT's traditional approach to its iconic monsters, but 'Unlife' definitely adds fresh substance of equal merit.

That's an insightful comment about early D&D before rules bloat turned it into a monster itself. (In fact, there is a free, 1 page set of rules for D&D (Searchers of the Unknown) which takes exactly that idea and applies it to characters. I look forward to reading book of unlife.
