I think what's happened is that people realized they can "geek out" about non-geeky topics. "Geek" as a verb is an activity that until recently was only described derisively about stuff that "geeky" the adjective describes.

In the case of Geek Culture, we should limit ourselves to the older adjective meaning of the word, not the newer verb meaning.
