"Perverse" also comes to mind, and "stubborn" or more politely "single minded" but those are more traits of the
person who engages in this sort of build.
Lateral? as in "Lateral thinking"? I know my math teacher accused me of going about things bass ackwards on a number of occasions but put down that I was a "lateral thinker" on my report card :D
